Usually it doesn't take long to be indexed in Google. All you really need to do is put up a blog or a website and keep adding keyword-related content to it without over-stuffing the keywords in your pages. I honestly don't remember what came first for me. I suppose the backlinks do help but I think I was indexed in Google before I even had them.
