When google update's its index, once a month, recaculating ranks by a specific algorithm. This time period is called Google Dance. It will last a few days and the results in the search engine will fluctuate. Some websites will go down others will go up and some will disappear but all will return to normal ranks after the update is completed.

This is probably the best explanation of the Google Dance I have seen. It is caused by changes in the Index which is caused by tweakings in the Google Algorithm or index updates.
